I cut last night’s class short due to the massive amount of rain that soaked through my pants and my shirt (think wet t-shirt contest for teachers). It was bad. Luckily, Adam had a t-shirt in the trunk of the car that I was able to retrieve. However, my hair, pants, shoes, and underthings were all soaked. It was kind of the funniest thing that’s happened in a long time (that I was actually able to laugh about). Class went well, but I cut things short so everyone could go home and put on dry clothes.
I stayed up too late last night watching Six Feet Under and I paid for it today. I went to work at The Shoulder but could barely function, so I brought all the grant stuff Debbie wants me to read home, put on my jammies, and took a nap. I also sort of half-watched Rear Window and Vertigo. Both are excellent and come highly recommended. Then I traded them in for the last disc of the first season of SFU. Yes, I have an addiction to TV shows on DVD. Sue me.
Since today was a bit of a lazy day for me, tomorrow will be consumed with planning, grading, and reading many, many essays so I can go to Atlanta Sunday with a clear conscience. For now, I must lay my head down and relax. I’m still tired from being up till 1:00 this morning. Bon soir.

Not sure if anyone else out there loves Flannery O’Connor (yes, she’s a bit morbid and hard to swallow, but fascinating!), but I read this article from Touchstone about evangelical writing a la O’Connor. Again, I must say that the writers mentioned in this article are so much better than Peretti, Dekker, et al. The concept of worldview and how to place a Christian worldview and perspective amidst real-life circumstance is how to reflect God’s glory, not writing crazy and creepy stories about giant bats and alternate realities. Call me crazy.
I watched Fracture this morning, the new Anthony Hopkins movie out on DVD. It was quite interesting if you like lawyer mysteries. As an added bonus, I will be trading it for another disc of Six Feet Under tonight after class. That’ll be a good distraction from the 50 some-odd essays I have to read this week and the lesson preps I have to make before Sunday when we go to Atlanta. I have a lot of work to do.
Three more days till the Braves v. Mets. Yahoo!
I read this today and it pretty much articulates how I feel about church right now. Glad someone else thinks so too.
So far today, I have done quite a bit–wrote a schedule for my classes, went running, got the next disc of Six Feet Under from Blockbuster, watched an episode, and vacuumed–which is good. A sense of accomplishment is always good. I still have several things to get done today, but it’s been a good start to the short week. I’m also very excited about going to see the Mets at the Braves on Sunday and going to a Labor Day party on Monday. I just need to figure out if I can burn podcasts onto CDs for the ride to and from Atlanta.
I’ve also decided I need to read the book of Isaiah. I’ve never read it before, and I think it’s about time.
If you like to read, check out dailylit.com, a website that sends a daily slice of literature to your RSS feed or email address. I’m getting Jane Austen’s Emma sent to me everyday.
Also, I am very much liking Six Feet Under.
Here’s to another semi-uneventful week and weekend. Friday night, after going to swim at Vicki’s and then it storming like crazy, I went home and started watching Six Feet Under, which I enjoyed. Saturday morning, Adam and I took Penny running, laid around for a bit, I did some work, we went to Wal-Mart, and then we went out with a few of Adam’s new firefighter friends. We went to Hooters to watch UFC, which we barely even saw because we promptly left to go to this club called Skylounge that’s at the top of a hotel in downtown Mobile. By the by, I don’t like Hooters. Today we literally laid around all day, I did some laundry, and I just enjoyed a very juicy seedless watermelon. It was delicious.
I think tonight may be an early night for me. I didn’t get as much as I had hoped done in the way of prepping for class this week. Good thing I have tomorrow off.
This is cruel but funny:
I just found the greatest RSS Reader. I’m sure I’m way behind the times, but Google Reader is a million times better than the reader I was using on My Yahoo. Also, it actually plays podcasts, which I have been playing around with and listening to all morning instead of working. I did get pics up on the website from last week’s luncheon and now have to work on updating the mailing list. Looks like another chance to listen to podcasts. Hooray for technology!
The Shoulder was on TV in a newscast about an addict who killed his aunt and uncle. Sad, but you can watch it here. (Psst. I’m the one sitting in the circle with the brown sweater on towards the end of the story.)
I got a message from the English Department Chair today telling me that all of the compositions that the students will write in my classes must be written in class in order to deter cheating. Seriously? This is a college-level composition class and they can’t be trusted to write their own compositions at home? I am stunned.
This seriously changes my plans for this class. I am more than a bit disappointed.
