Yesterday Adam had to get up early to play a victim in a mock school shooting in Mobile. He came home and said he wished he hadn’t worn the shirt he did because it had a logo for one of his former employers on it and one of the news stations filmed it. But we figured he wouldn’t make it on. I flipped on the TV last night just in time to see my husband laying on his stomach, exposing said shirt and logo. Ha. Unfortunately I can’t pull that video off of their website, but you can watch this one instead. You can see Adam for half a second laying on the floor in the clip right after the old man in yellow laying on the floor moaning, “Oh, my chest.”
In completely unrelated news, we had an extremely tasty dinner last night: zesty chicken and potatoes with panzanella (bread salad). It was delicious and I learned that I like Grey Poupon. Who knew.
Also, we’re going to run in a 5K in less than two weeks. I ran two miles last night–hard–and it was great. Plus it will be another thing to cross off my list.
I got Anne Lamott’s new book from the library yesterday. So far, I’m not enjoying it as much as I have other books she’s written. She gets into this Bush-bashing mode that I was able to tolerate before (not that I’m a Bush-lover, I just don’t need to be reminded in every essay that she’s definitely not). She does remind me, though, that God is in everything and that kindness toward others is of utmost importance.
Riding in to work tonight, I heard this story on NPR. Apparently, TV isn’t just TV anymore. All the major networks are running their new fall line-ups online for free. Forget paying itunes a buck a pop. It seems there’s quite a controversy about it since local affiliates of the major networks potentially won’t receive the same viewership, but they can’t track where people are accessing which shows online to give the local stations some support. I think it’s great, especially since it’s a pain to set the VCR to record programs (we only have a VCR on the little TV and then you have to switch the bunny ears–that’s right, I said bunny ears–over to that TV) and some of us are too poor for DVR or cable for that matter.
With a $25 gift card in hand the other day, I had trouble choosing between the Over the Rhine CD and the Feist CD. I went with Over the Rhine, and the CD is fabulous. You can listen to the whole thing on the Over the Rhine website. However, I saw the entire video for Feist’s “1234,” the one featured in the new IPod commercials, and it too is fabulous. Take a peek.
Today is National Punctuation Day! Be sure to pick up a copy of Eats, Shoots & Leaves.
I was very pleased to find out that the Mobile Museum of Art will have the art of M.C. Escher, graphic artist and optical illusionist, starting next month. Here’s a preview:

I have had a great weekend. Yesterday, Adam and I took Penny to the dog park, we went to the Honda dealership to find out about trading in the car (not quite yet), bought the new Over the Rhine CD at Barnes & Noble, and went to Dave and Jennifer’s to watch football.
Today, we went shopping at a great store in Mobile called Fresh Market to buy radicchio for a recipe. We ended up buying camembert , chianti, and pumpkin spice coffee as well. Then we ate the cheese and drank the wine while watching football and before falling asleep for a nice long siesta. I just got up. It’s pouring rain and has been almost all weekend. Now I’m going to make my chicken with radicchio and my hubby and I will soon feast. Oh, and I made cherry dump cake that smells amazing and will be our dessert. I’m not used to eating so well. This is great!
Great book. Mediocre movie. The Outsiders celebrates 40 years. Read it in 8th grade, Mr. Burruto’s class, and it remains a favorite of mine.
Stay gold.
This morning I was pleased to find a plethora of interesting articles in my Google Reader. Here are the top 4:
EW’s assessment of Heroes season deux.
Want to learn a foreign language?
Relevant covers Kanye.
And, my favorite, seven things to do with boxed wine.
I also got a message from NaNoWriMo saying they’re starting sign-ups on October 1. I’m actually considering doing it this year, since this is the first year in a few that I don’t have graduate school and a thesis hanging over my head. I also have a bit of time on my hands considering I only work about 26 hours a week and Thanksgiving is in November. However, Adam graduates from fire school that month and I think my dad will be visiting. Decisions, decisions.
Anyway, I’m going to take Penny to the dog park for a bit and read My Friend Leonard that I got from the library yesterday (I’ve already got 90 pages down). It’s good so far, but more of the same. Tonight is Leonard Cohen, I’m Your Man. (Anyone see a Leonard-theme here?)
Gosh, the weather is lovely. We’ve had the windows open the past few nights and the cool breeze is delightful. I’ve been sitting at Cafe Amore all morning getting things in order for class today, and I could honestly sit here all day. I’m the only customer here and I’m sitting outside under a giant tree drinking coffee (free refills!) and reading. Ahh.
I decided I really want to go to the New Orleans Aquarium for my birthday next month, but I’m not sure we’ll have the dough. Adam has a long weekend for Columbus Day, and it would be nice to get out of dodge for at least a day. But we’ll see.
I’m almost done with A Million Little Pieces. I may read the sequel next, though I got a few Flannery O’Connor books from the library Friday that I may peruse first. I feel like I haven’t been reading enough lately, but I have 60 essays to read every week plus a class to plan plus another part-time job, and I just haven’t had a lot of time. Plus I tend to be a lazy bum when I can.
